Today marks a remarkable milestone — 58 years of business at Industrial Sales & Manufacturing, Inc. (ISM). What began in 1967 with a single drill press in the garage of our family home has evolved into a six-facility, 150-employee manufacturing powerhouse right here in Erie, Pennsylvania. As we celebrate nearly six decades of service, innovation, and community, we honor the visionary who started it all: our founder, James Rutkowski Sr.

From Humble Beginnings to Manufacturing Leadership

In 1967, with just 15 cents in his pocket and a ten-dollar payment plan on a Fosdick drill press, Dad rolled up his sleeves and went to work. Through grit, persistence, and a relentless pursuit of quality, he built ISM into one of the region’s most respected contract manufacturers — a trusted partner for over 800 companies and a producer of more than 25,000 unique parts over the years.

What makes this journey so profound isn’t just the numbers — it’s the legacy of resilience and values that Dad instilled in the company. From overcoming economic downturns to navigating material shortages and offshore competition, ISM has remained steadfast in its commitment to doing business “Better, Faster, and Smarter Than Anyone Else.”

A Three-Generation Legacy

Today, ISM is more than a business — it’s a family legacy. Jimmy, Charlie, and Ann have each played a vital role in continuing the mission that Dad and Mom (Joan) started all those years ago. It’s a rare and special thing to see a family company span three generations, growing stronger with each new challenge and innovation.

As Dad often says, “We’ve created an environment where employees are treated with dignity and respect, and they share in the company’s success.” That spirit remains the foundation of who we are today.

Innovating for the Future

As we honor the past, we’re equally excited about the future. ISM continues to lead the way in advanced manufacturing by integrating technologies such as LightWeld laser welding systems, 5-axis machining, and robotic turning cells, thereby increasing precision and efficiency in our operations. Our recent acquisition of Clifton Tube Cutting in Greenville, PA, has expanded our capabilities and geographic reach, reinforcing our commitment to strategic growth.

This isn’t just about machines — it’s about empowering people. As Dad witnessed over the decades, what once took days can now be done in minutes thanks to digital transformation. But at ISM, we’ve never lost sight of the people behind the process — our team members, our customers, and our community.

Remembering the Moments

Alongside the milestones and metrics, there are personal stories that remind us why this journey matters. Like the time Peter Fonda visited our facility and forgot his wallet in the car. Or when President George H.W. Bush borrowed a pen from Dad and later sent a thank-you note — a token we still cherish today.

These memories, along with the relationships built through organizations like the Manufacturer & Business Association (MBA), show that the heart of ISM is not just manufacturing excellence — it’s people, passion, and purpose.

Here’s to 58 Years — And Many More

As we look forward, we remain dedicated to our founder’s vision: combining innovation with integrity, technology with trust, and family values with global impact.

Thank you to our customers, employees, partners, and friends who have been part of this incredible 58-year journey. And most of all, thank you, Dad, for daring to dream big, work hard, and lead with heart.

Happy 58th Anniversary, ISM. This one’s for you, Dad.
